POTW #763
(Week of 1 May, 2011)

May Day* is celebrated in many places for many reasons. It's a traditional pagan holiday in various cultures, but it's also International Workers' Day. Depending on where you are you might see Maypoles, Morris dancing, even a May Queen. Someone might leave a bouquet of flowers on your doorstep.

Here in Phrenopolis, May Day marks the point at which we stop moving away from Halloween on the calendar and begin moving *towards* it again. And so we rejoice, with this anticipatory verse:

Adorable Animals

By organs hidden we are bidden
To shelter adorable animals
Their giant eyes sensationalized
Their tiny chomping mandibles
Bizarre behavior just adds flavor
Their tenderness is tangible
Perhaps a fondue or a steak or a stew?
...but that would make us cannibals

(*Not to be confused with Mayday, a distress signal, which may or may not also be appropriate here.)
